Do the rich take it with them? YES!

Last week we went to the Cementerio Recoleta, where the rich and elite are burried. It was beatiful, with crypts ranging from the incredibly ornate to very minimalist (though with a requisite crucifix on the inside) made of marble, stone and brick.

I can only assume that the tombs of the rich (as opposed to the historically/culturally signigificant) are maintained only as long as the families continue to fund the plot. There were many whoe windows had been broken and seemed to have been abandoned for some time. We were able to peek into these and see some of the internal structure. It´s hard to tell from the pictures, but there is a set of incredibly steep and precarious looking stairs leadingly down to allow cascets to be placed on shelves. I can´t imagine carrying a full cascet down those stairs!

side note... there are something like 60 cats running around, likely disposing of the rats. They roam around in and out of crypts with openings, and right around closing time, someone comes in and lays out some cat food and water throughout the cemetary.

I´m not sure if I prefer that the smell from the open crypts be the stale odor of cat piss, or decay...

Macchu Picchu

This here is a view of Macchu Picchu from Wayna Picchu. Kathy and I arrived in Aguas Calientes the day before and got supplies for our next day adventure. Our intent was on climbing Wayna Picchu, but several people had told us that we would have to get in line at about 2.30 am in order to get the tickets. With our hopes lightly trampled we managed to get to the bus line at 4.30 am and made it to the gates at about 6.00 am. We had intended to hike up to Macchu Picchu from Aguas Calientes, but made the wisest decision and took a bus.

This is Wayna Picchu. Our goal for the day was to climb up this little beasty. After our guided tour of Macchu Picchu, that convieniently dropped us off at the entrance to Wayna Picchu we started our hike to the top. The hike up Wayna Picchu is incredibly beautiful with amazing views of Macchu Picchu and amazing ruins. The distance of the hike is fairly short, but the elevation gain is about 1200 feet! Which for us was pretty rough. The stairs on the hike up are definately sketchy, and near the top you have to crawl through a little cave and climb up an after thought of a ladder. It was fun.

This is the sun beasty. He was running all around on top of Wayna Picchu. This is my favorite picture of the day. I hope you enjoy him acting all coy.

Walking so much.

Just like our first date
Sensible shoes don´t help
Aimlessly walking

Crab at the pier.

Ambitious monster
Why are you eating a feather
That won´t satisfy
